This is a plain abdominal X- ray of a 8 year old girl showing a foreign body in the stomach. The patient presented with history of accidental ingestion of a piece of magnet for 3 to 4 days. An upper GI Endoscopy was carried out due to the large size of the foreign body and it showed a piece of magnet in the fundus of stomach which you can appreciate here. Initially a basket was used to retrieve the magnet. After numerous attempts, the basket could not grip the magnet due to its round margins. Subsequently a Roth net was used. Its octagonal net is designed to open to maximum capacity while the reinforced net material provides extra security when passing the cricopharyngeus. These retrievers are ideal for the removal of round, blunt or otherwise hard to grasp foreign bodies. After opening it on the top of magnet, the net was closed and both the Roth net along with the magnet was removed with simultaneous extubation of the endoscope. The patient had no symptoms and was sent home after the procedure. The magnetic foreign body that was retrieved can be seen here.
